Enrolling in Medicare is crucial to ensure you have health coverage when you become eligible. The process varies depending on your circumstances. If you're already receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65, you'll be automatically enrolled in both Part A and Part B. If you're not receiving Social Security benefits, you can sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). The IEP begins three months before your 65th birthday and lasts for seven months.
You can apply for Medicare online through the Social Security Administration's website, visit a local Social Security office, or call them for assistance. It's important to enroll during your IEP to avoid late enrollment penalties.
