Turning 65 in Nevada and Still Working:  Do You Need Medicare Yet?

Turning 65 does not always mean every person must make the same Medicare decision at the same time. Some Nevadans are retired before 65. Others are still working full time, covered by a spouse's active employer plan, or enrolled in group health coverage through an employer.

The first question is whether your current coverage is based on active employment. This is important because retiree coverage, COBRA, Marketplace coverage, and active employer coverage do not always work the same way with Medicare. Before delaying Medicare Part B, ask the employer benefits department how the current plan coordinates with Medicare when you become eligible.

A second question is employer size. In many situations, Medicare coordination rules can differ depending on whether the employer has 20 or more employees. The benefits department should be able to explain whether Medicare would be primary or secondary and whether delaying Part B could create a gap or future penalty issue.

You should also ask about prescription drug coverage. If you delay Part D or other Medicare drug coverage, you generally want to know whether your current drug coverage is considered creditable. Keep any creditable coverage notices you receive because they may be helpful later if you enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan.

If you are contributing to a Health Savings Account, ask about how Medicare enrollment may affect future HSA contributions. Medicare Part A can be retroactive in certain situations, so this should be reviewed before making contributions near your Medicare start date.

The goal is not to rush into a plan. The goal is to make a clean decision based on your current coverage, your work status, and your expected retirement date.

Quick Takeaways
- Confirm whether your coverage is based on active employment.
- Ask the employer benefits department how the plan works with Medicare.
- Keep creditable prescription drug coverage notices.
- Review HSA rules before enrolling in Medicare.
- Do not assume COBRA or retiree coverage protects you the same way as active employer coverage.
