June is Men’s Health Month
Preventive Care Conversations Men Should Not Put Off

June is Men’s Health Month, a reminder that preventive care is not just about treating problems after they
happen. For many men, routine check-ins, screening conversations, medication reviews, and lifestyle
discussions can help identify health risks earlier.

Why men’s preventive care matters
Many conditions that affect men - including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, depression, and
certain cancers - may not cause obvious symptoms early on. That is why preventive visits and screenings can
be important even when someone feels fine.
CDC health data shows that a portion of U.S. men report fair or poor health, and many do not meet
recommended physical activity guidelines. Men’s Health Month is a useful reminder to reconnect with a
primary care provider and update a prevention plan.

Topics men may want to discuss with their doctor
Blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, and heart health.
Colorectal cancer screening timing and options.
Prostate health questions based on age, symptoms, and risk factors.
Depression, stress, sleep, alcohol use, tobacco use, and social isolation.
Medication side effects, falls, balance, exercise, weight, and nutrition.
Vaccines and preventive services recommended for their age and health history.

How this connects to Medicare
Medicare covers many preventive and screening services, including certain exams, shots, lab tests, and
screenings. Medicare’s yearly Wellness visit is intended to develop or update a personalized prevention plan
based on health and risk factors.
The yearly Wellness visit is not the same as a full physical exam. Costs may also change if a visit includes
additional diagnostic services, tests, or treatment beyond the preventive visit.

Plan-related questions to ask
Is my primary care doctor in-network for the plan I have now?
Do any screenings require referrals, prior authorization, or specific facilities?
Are my prescriptions still covered well under my current plan?
Would a different plan structure better fit my doctors, medications, and care needs next year?

A simple June action step
Use Men’s Health Month as a reason to schedule a preventive care visit, update your medication list, write
down health questions, and review whether your current Medicare health plan still matches your doctors,
prescriptions, and budget.

Call-to-action
If your health needs, doctors, prescriptions, or preferred facilities have changed, a Medicare plan review can
help you understand whether your current coverage still fits your situation.

Compliance-friendly note
This article is for general educational purposes only and is not medical advice. People should talk with their doctor or other
health care provider about symptoms, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Coverage, costs, provider networks, and benefits
can vary by plan and by service.
