Can a Medicare Plan Actually Put Money Back in Your Social Security Check?
What Las Vegas Seniors Need to Know About the Medicare Part B Giveback Benefit in 2026 By David Karel, Nevada Licensed Medicare Agent • Medicare in Las Vegas • (702) 403-6348 A few weeks ago, a client called me — a retired schoolteacher who moved to Henderson from Illinois about three years ago. She had seen an advertisement for a Medicare Advantage plan that claimed it could put money back into her Social Security check every month. She wanted to know if it was real, or just another too-good-to-be-true marketing pitch. My answer: it's real. But whether it's right for you depends on a lot more than the headline number. Let me explain exactly how it works, what to watch out for, and how to figure out if one of these plans makes sense for your situation here in the Las Vegas area. First — What Is the Part B Giveback Benefit? Every Medicare beneficiary — even those enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan — pays a monthly Medicare Part B premium. In 2026, that standard premium is $202.90 per month. For most people, it is automatically deducted from their Social Security check before it ever hits their bank account. The Part B Giveback Benefit — officially called a Part B Premium Reduction — is a feature offered by certain Medicare Advantage plans where the insurance company pays a portion of that $202.90 back on your behalf. The reduction is applied directly through the Social Security Administration, which means your monthly Social Security deposit goes up by whatever the giveback amount is. No checks to cash. No reimbursement forms to file. It just happens automatically. How much can the giveback be? It varies by plan and by your zip code. Technically it can range from as little as $0.10 per month to the full $202.90. In practice, many plans offering this benefit in ClarkCounty fall somewhere in between — so the actual savings you would see depends entirely on which specific plan is available in your part of the Las Vegas valley and whether it fits your overall healthcare needs. “If your Social Security check is $1,800 and you enroll in a plan with a $100 Part B giveback, your monthly deposit becomes $1,900 —automatically, every month, for as long as you stay on that plan.” Who Qualifies? Not everyone with Medicare is eligible for the giveback benefit. To qualify, you need to meet three conditions: 1. You are enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. 2. You are personally responsible for paying your own Part B premium. If a state program — such as Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program — is already covering your Part B premium, you are not eligible, because you are not the one paying it. 3. You live in a zip code where a Medicare Advantage plan with a giveback benefit is available. This is a critical point for Las Vegas residents — availability varies by zip code across Clark County, and not every neighborhood has the same options. One more thing worth noting: the giveback benefit is only available through Medicare Advantage plans. If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, you cannot combine it with a Medicare Advantage plan — they are two separate paths. So if the giveback appeals to you and you currently have Medigap, that conversation requires a full plan comparison before making any move. The Part I Always Make Sure My Clients Hear Here is where I ask you to slow down for just a moment — because this is where I see people make costly mistakes. The giveback benefit sounds great on paper. And it can be. But the monthly premium reduction is only one part of what a Medicare Advantage plan costs you in a year. The full picture includes your out-of-pocket maximum, your copays and coinsurance for doctor visits and hospital stays, your prescription drug costs, and whether the plan's provider network includes your doctors and specialists here in the Las Vegas valley. Let me give you a real-world example of how this plays out. Plan A offers a $120/month Part B giveback — saving you $1,440 per year. But it has a $5,000 out-of-pocket maximum, a narrow HMO network that does not include your cardiologist, and a $615 prescription drug deductible. Plan B offers no giveback. But it has a $900 out-of-pocket maximum, includes your doctor, and covers your medications at a lower cost tier. If you have a significant health event in that year — a surgery, a hospital stay, a specialist visit — Plan B could save you thousands more than Plan A, even without the giveback. The $1,440 in premium savings disappears quickly against a higher cost-sharing structure. None of this means the giveback is bad. It means it needs to be evaluated as part of the whole plan— not as the reason to choose a plan. What Does This Look Like in Las Vegas Specifically? Here in Clark County, several carriers offer Medicare Advantage plans with Part B giveback benefits in 2026. This is one of the reasons that working with someone who knows this market — not a national call center working from a zip code database — makes a real difference. "For a complete breakdown of how the giveback benefit works, who qualifies, and the full pros and cons, visit our dedicated guide: The Medicare Part B Giveback Benefit — What Las Vegas Seniors Need to Know." I check these things as part of every plan comparison I do. Which plans offer a giveback in your specific zip code. Whether your doctors are in the network. What your actual drug costs would be What the out-of-pocket maximum is. And then we look at the whole picture together before you make any decision. One More Thing: Plans Change Every Year Medicare Advantage plans are repriced and restructured annually. A plan offering a $100 giveback in 2026 may reduce that amount — or eliminate it entirely — in 2027. Networks change. Drug formularies change. Out-of-pocket maximums change. This is why I always encourage my clients to do a plan review every year during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from October 15 through December 7. If you are currently enrolled in a plan with a giveback benefit, that does not mean it is still the best option for next year. And if you are not enrolled in one now, a plan that fits your situation may have become available since you last looked. Want to Find Out If a Giveback Plan Is Right for You? I am happy to do a free, no-pressure plan comparison for you — looking at what giveback plans are available in your specific zip code here in the Las Vegas area, how they compare to other options, and whether the monthly savings make sense when you look at the full cost picture. There is no cost for this. No obligation. Just a straightforward conversation with a local advisor who has been helping Las Vegas and Henderson residents navigate Medicare for over 20 years — and who is a Medicare beneficiary himself.
